Conference Scope
Symbiosis is a basic natural phenomenon that shapes the face of animate nature. It is
a very important adaptation strategy that is achieved by association of dissimilar organisms.
Almost all animals and plants live in close contact with various representatives of the microbial
world. To characterize these interactions, Anton de Bary (1879) coined the term "symbiosis,
" referring to to long-term coexistence of different organisms. Subsequently, the notion
of symbiosis was narrowed and was used for a long time to describe only mutualistic (mutually
beneficial) relationships. It was found, however, that mutualistic and antagonistic interactions
are controlled by similar molecular mechanisms and are linked by numerous evolutionary transitions.
On the basis of studies of a wide range of symbioses, involving all living things, a unitized
system of conceptions and approaches has been created that can be called
the doctrine
of symbiosis.
The current view of symbiosis as a stable system that emerges from interaction between organisms
from different species to the advantage of at least one of the partners involved is increasingly
gaining acceptance.
Conference topics will be:
- The current view of symbiosis
- The diversity of biological interactions in symbioses
- Regulatory links
- Signal-mediated interactions
- Microbial communication and its role in the interaction with the host macroorganism
- Metabolic and genetic integration of partners
- Enhancement of the adaptation potential of organisms through the formation of symbiosis.
Coevolution of symbionts
- Symbiotic models
- Peculiarities of the interaction mechanisms in plant-microbial symbioses
- Symbiology as the science of symbiosis
- Symbiogenetics
Other aspects of symbiosis research, suggested by the conference participants, may also
be included in the conference program.
The scientific program for the conference will consist of plenary lectures on the
conference topics, contributed oral reports, poster presentations, and round-table
discussions. It is expected that several leading Russian scientists and honorary guests will
lecture at the conference.
The duration of each plenary lecture will be 30 min and that of each contributed report
will be 20 min, with 5 min for discussion. The conference hall will be equipped with a
transparency projector. Computer-generated Power Point presentations will also be possible.
The poster board size will be 120 cm (height) by 50 cm (width).
Venue - Institute of Biochemistry and Physiology of Plants and Microorganisms,
Russian Academy of Sciences, 13 Prospekt Entuziastov, Saratov 410049, Russia.
